Formula Rationale

Bupleurum Entangled Qi Formula is a modification of the traditional Bupleurum and Cyperus Combination (Chai Hu Xiang Fu Tang) with herbs specific for treating lump formation. Lump formation is a result of Qi and blood stagnation combined with phlegm accumulation. Taraxacum (pu gong ying) eliminates heat and toxins. Trichosanthes root (tian hua fen) reduces inflammation and dispels pus. Vaccaria (wang bu liu xing) invigorates blood circulation and is traditionally used to remove tumors. Red peony (chi shao), salvia (dan shen), tang kuei (dang gui) and ligusticum (chuan xiong) invigorate the blood. Blue citrus (qing pi) treats pain and swelling and disperses stagnant Qi. Prunella (xia ku cao) reduces swelling and has anti-toxic effects. Fritillaria (chuan bei mu) disperses lumps. Cyperus (xiang fu) is anti-spasmodic and relieves pain.

Clinical Notes

1. The fibroid or cyst will be softer in three months with reduction in size taking 6 to 12 months. Therefore, this formula should be used long-term
2. For lymph swellings, it may be necessary to clean the lymph glands with an anti-viral formula. Astra Isatis would be useful because it contains seaweeds that help reduce lymph swellings. Also consider Clear Heat or Clear Phlegm

Additional Formulas

• Combine Bupleurum Entangled Qi with Crampbark Plus (2 of each formula QID) for uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts if this condition is not accompanied with unusual or excessive bleeding. Combine Bupleurum Entangled Qi with Unlocking for uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts if Heat signs are present (2 tablets of each formula QID)
• In cases of infertility with yin deficiency after the period and Liver Qi Stagnation with depressive fire before the period, take Bupleurum Entangled Qi for the last half of the cycle and Fertile Garden for the first half
• For additional Blood circulation properties add Regeneration
