Formula Rationale

This formula is indicated for lack of both Qi and blood. The formula is the combination of two smaller formulas, The Four Gentlemen (Si Jun Zi Tang), to tonify Qi, and The Four Substances (Si Wu Tang) to tonify blood. Codonopsis (dang shen) tonifies the Qi while rehmannia (shu di huang) nourishes the blood. White atractylodes (bai zhu) and poria (fu ling) strengthen the spleen and remove dampness thereby assisting codonopsis. White peony (bai shao) and tang kuei (dang gui) nourish the blood and assist rehmannia in this capacity. An additional herb, spatholobus (ji xue teng) has been added to enhance the formula’s ability to both move and tonify the blood. Along with ligusticum (chuan xiong), the formula now takes on the increased ability to create new blood, making it valuable to athletic performers who tend to have exhausted blood. Licorice (zhi gan cao) tonifies the Qi and harmonizes the middle burner. Ginger (gan jiang) and red date (da zao) regulate the absorbing function of the spleen and stomach.

Clinical Notes

This is one of the most frequently used herbal preparations in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The formula is particularly indicated for Qi and blood deficiency which can result from many different factors, particularly menstruation or childbirth. The formula is commonly prescribed during the menstrual cycle when it is appropriate to tonify the Qi and blood, i.e., from the end of menstruation to ovulation. If Qi stagnation is present, another formula, Woman's Balance, (Xiao Yao San) can be used during the time between ovulation and menstruation. Qi and blood deficiency can effect women or men.

Additional Formulas

Woman's Balance for liver qi stagnation with signs of PMS
Postpartum for Qi and blood deficiency following delivery and to more strongly move Qi and blood
Three Immortals for menopause
Full Force with Astragalus for athletic performance boost
