Therapeutic Actions
· This formula is used primarily to support immune function for people who have disorders of chronic viral inflammation.
· Useful in persons diagnosed with chronic viral syndromes such as HIV-disease, chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS)/chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and herpes, and may also be used for symptoms associated with other immune dysfunction disorders.
· The individual herbs and herb combinations in the formula are traditionally used to address symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, fever, diarrhea, digestive disorders, muscle aches, inability to concentrate, swollen lymph nodes, and low sexual energy.

Contraindications: During a high fever, discontinue for a few days. This formula is designed as a balanced formula and may be used continuously. This formula is primarily meant to be used as an adjunct to Western medicine treatment of chronic viral infections.

Formula Rationale
Enhance is comprised solely of Chinese herbs. It was designed in the early 1990’s by Misha Cohen, OMD, L.Ac. based on her experience and the experience at the Quan Yin Clinic in treating thousands of HIV positive patients. Enhance is based on fu zheng therapy, which means “restoring normality.”
The main ingredient, reishi (red ganoderma; ling zhi) is a Qi tonic, which appears to contain one of the most highly active polysaccharides found in mushrooms. Ganoderma has been used in China in treatment for viral hepatitis and cancer. Red Ganoderma and astragalus (huang qi) have been shown in Chinese research to have immune enhancing properties. Other Qi tonics are included for their traditional energy strengthening effects.
Isatis (ban lan gen and da qing ye) extract is used in high doses for heat-clearing and toxin-cleaning properties. Chinese research documents anti-viral activity as well as clinical applications. Chinese texts document treatment effects, in hepatitis, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and viral warts. A high proportion of herbs that clear heat and clean toxin are used for the underlying heat/inflammation present in persons with HIV infection, HCV, and other chronic viral syndromes as determined through traditional tongue and pulse diagnosis.
Spatholobus (ji xue teng) extract was chosen for its clinically shown ability to help improve bone marrow function, thereby assisting in the formation of white blood cells and red blood cells. It is used extensively in China to treat the bone marrow suppression effects of chemotherapy. Similarly, there are anecdotal reports from U.S. clinics that it appears to be helpful to people undergoing drug treatments that cause bone marrow suppression. Other blood tonics and blood vitalizers in the formula are speculated to be important for bone marrow function.
