Therapeutic Actions

This formula is taken for immune enhancement and immune regulation in conjunction with disorders of chronic viral inflammation and infection. Useful in persons with chronic viral syndromes such as HIV-disease, Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS)/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and herpes. May also be used with most other immune dysfunction disorders. Addresses fatigue, weight loss, nightsweats, spontaneous sweating, fever, diarrhea, digestive disorders, muscle aches, inability to concentrate, swollen lymph nodes, low sexual energy.

Administration

Internal: 20 tablets per day, suggested use is 5 tablets 4 times per day, between meals

Contraindications: During a high fever, discontinue for a few days. This formula is designed as a balanced formula for immune enhancement and chronic viral syndromes and may be used continuously.

Enhance is designed to be part of the Quan Yin treatment protocol. It should not be substituted for any prescription or experimental drugs. Enhance should be taken under medical supervision. It is available only to licensed health care professionals.

Formula Rationale

Enhance is comprised solely of Chinese herbs and is the base formula used in the Quan Yin Herbal Program for HIV Positive persons. It has been designed by Misha Cohen, OMD, L.Ac. based on her experience and the experience at the Quan Yin Clinic in treating thousands of HIV positive patients. Enhance is based on fu zheng therapy, which means “restoring normality.” The formula differs from other approaches used in that it is designed to be easier to digest (protects the spleen and stomach) and contains a greater percentage of herbs that are believed to have antibacterial and anti-viral activity according to Chinese and American research. Enhance also has a higher percentage of herbs to tonify and vitalize blood because of the crucial nature of protecting and strengthening the bone marrow in HIV positive persons.

The main ingredient, ganoderma (ling zhi) is a Qi tonic which appears to contain one of the most highly active polysaccharides found in mushrooms. Ganoderma has been used in China to treat hepatitis and cancer. Ganoderma and astragalus (huang qi) have been shown in Chinese research to be strongly immune enhancing. Other Qi tonics are included for their apparent immune enhancing and energy strengthening effects according to research.
A concentrated Isatis extract is used in high doses for its strong anti-viral activity, particularly in hepatitis, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and viral warts. It has a broad range of safety. Additionally a high proportion of clear heat clean toxin herbs are used for the underlying heat inflammation/ viral infection present in persons with HIV infection, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and other chronic viral syndromes.

Spatholobus (ji xue teng) extract was chosen for its clinically shown ability to help increase Ingredients bone marrow function, thereby assisting in the formation of white blood cells and red blood cells. It is used extensively in China to treat the bone-marrow suppression effects of chemotherapy. Similarly, it appears to be helpful to people with HIV for the side effects of drug therapy such as AZT anemia. Other blood tonics and blood vitalizes in the formula appear to be important in the strengthening of the immunity through stimulating and protecting the bone marrow.

Clinical Notes

1. Enhance may be taken daily as it is a balanced formula. It is neither too warm nor too cooling, neither too tonifying nor too dispersing.

2. Enhance is used in the Quan Yin Herbal Program in San Francisco as the base formula for treatment of persons with HIV. It has replaced previous formulas as it has proven easier to digest, and has a greater percentage of blood tonic and vitalizing herbs. This appears to be an extremely important immune-enhancing factor through which strengthening the bone marrow is accomplished.

3. The herbs contain adaptogens which help when the immune system is suppressed. Enhance may be used with immunosuppressive therapies for cancer.

4. Drs. Chang and Yeung's study from UC Davis and Hong Kong University show strong in vitro anti-HIV activity with viola (zi hua di ding), lonicera (jin yin hua), and isatis (ban lan gen & da qing ye) which are clear heat, clean toxin herbs included in the formula. A similar anti-HIV activity was also observed with epimedium (yin yang huo) which is a yang tonifying herb.

Additional Formulas

• Clear Heat was designed to be used as the primary adjunct formula to Enhance. Enhance, along with Clear Heat, has been the subject of two double blind studies (see Professional Health Concerns Newsletter, Vol. 5, #3). Clear Heat is specifically used for its anti-viral and anti-bacterial activities and is helpful for swollen lymph nodes. Included is a special ingredient, cordyceps, which is on the forefront of Chinese cancer research.

• Clear Air addresses acute and chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchial asthma, chronic cough with phlegm, wheezing, and chest pain

• Xanthium Relieve Surface addresses allergic rhinitis and skin itching due to rashes, dermatitis, poison oak, hives

• Colostroplex treats diarrheal disorders accompanied by spleen qi deficiency and mild Heat signs

• Coptis Purge Fire treats intense and acute localized inflammations, hives, sore throat, strep throat, eye and ear infections, sinus infection, herpes simplex outbreaks

• Astra Isatis is used during the prodromal stage of herpes to prevent outbreaks, or an alternate to Enhance

• Akebia Moist Heat is used for urinary tract infection and inflammation

• Phellostatin treats candidiasis by strengthening the digestive system while its antifungal properties eliminates pathogenic factors

• Source Qi is used for chronic diarrhea

• Formula H is used for damp heat signs including hemorrhoids
